Music stars hold benefit concert for friend with ALS
Posted August 20, 2002 in ALS News

MARK McEWEN reporting:
This Wednesday a benefit concert featuring Paul Simon, Suzanne Vega, Phoebe Snow and this gentleman right here, Garland Jeffreys, will raise money for a special friend, Denis Craine. Craine is a community activist in East Hampton, New York, who's been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease. Singer Garland Jeffreys is one of the concert organizers. You're going to perform as well. Hello, my friend.

Mr. GARLAND JEFFREYS (Singer/Songwriter): Hey, baby.

McEWEN: Tell us about this concert.

Mr. JEFFREYS: Well, Denis Craine is a--has been a powerful force in the East End for the last 20 years, especially helping young people and fighting against bias. I met him about 12 years ago. He's a--he's a wonderful guy, and he came down with this disease, Lou Gehrig's disease. It's--it's a crippling disease and it's been a devastating blow to the family, and he has five children. And a bunch of people got together--we call ourselves the Friends of Denis Craine--and we decided to put this concert on, and we've invited Paul Simon, who--who did it for us last year, last August, Suzanne Vega, Phoebe Snow, yours truly. We'll be rockin' on Wednesday night, 6:30 PM sharp. Be there or be square, is what I have to say.

McEWEN: Whereabouts--when they get out to the Hamptons, how do they find out where you'll be rockin'?

Mr. JEFFREYS: Well, the school of East Hampton has given us the--the soccer field grounds, which was a wonderful thing they did for us, and it--it's--it's going to be a community event, you know. Children under six, there's no charge, and--and the whole--the whole of East Hampton, which generally has a bad reputation for being a very su--superficial town, has risen to the occasion here--the police force, the medical team, the fi--the firemen, the people at la--large, the townspeople, have risen to the occasion come out for Denis Craine and this benefit.

McEWEN: Well, Garland, it's always a pleasure to see you.
You can get more information on our Web site, by the way...

Mr. JEFFREYS: Yeah.

McEWEN: ...www.cbsnews.com, and we'll see you out there this Wednesday.

Mr. JEFFREYS: Yeah, baby.

McEWEN: Always a pleasure to see you in the big city, my friend.

Mr. JEFFREYS: OK. Great to--great to be here.

McEWEN: Garland Jeffreys, everybody.

McEWEN: Yeah. Looking nice out here.
Thank you, Garland. All the best to you.

Mr. JEFFREYS: Thank you, baby. Thank you.
