Posted April 25, 2003 in ALS News

A teenager who stole a man's motorized wheelchair has been ordered to write a letter of apology to the victim.

Jacob J. Wright, 19, of Grand Island also was sentenced Thursday to 60 days in jail and 18 months probation. He pleaded guilty to felony theft for stealing a wheelchair from Joseph Hanley III on June 14.

Hanley, who has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, reported the chair had been stolen from his back yard. The chair was found in Wright's garage and was returned to Hanley.

Wright also was ordered to complete a drug and alcohol evaluation and to attend Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous meetings three times a week. He also must complete a life skills program.
