History of Hearts O’ Hope - Ride For Life’s Candy for a Cure

delores_candy.gifFor two years the Ride For Life organization had the pleasure of knowing and working with Dolores Daly, a wonderful PALS and native New Yorker. Dolores was listening to a radio in May of 2002 when she heard reference to the Ride For Life caravan traveling through New York City. Dolores, already unable to drive, called her long time friend Carol Ann Elias and they hastily made plans to rendezvous with other patients along the route. For two years the Ride enjoyed Dolores’ company. Sadly, she passed away and was unable to make Ride 2004.

Dolores was a teacher at High School of Science in the Bronx. Her friend Carol Ann and others organized a fundraiser in Dolores’ honor. They created a candy bar wrapper which included a photo of Dolores along with ALS facts. Their highly successful campaign made a donation to RFL in Dolores’ name.

Ride Founder, Chris Pendergast saw Carol Ann’s work and immediately thought of Valentine’s Day. After discussing with Carol Ann, the decision was made to incorporate the concept into an RFL Valentine’s Day fundraiser. With time a critical issue, a team was quickly assembled.

Sunny Sheppard, a friend of Carol Ann’s, whose brother-in-law Steven Sheppard lost his 11 year battle with ALS, designed a beautiful candy wrapper and went on to get wrappers printed and shipped. A dozen volunteers were assembled and wrapped 1200 candy bars. E-mails were sent out and volunteer sellers were recruited. In a short period of time the program was up and running.

Final tabulations indicated a solid success. Approximately $2400 was raised. A sweet result. Thank you everyone and especially thank you Dolores, the inspiration!

This year we are hoping to increase by 50% our sales. If anyone is interested in being a volunteer seller, please contact Susan Wahlert at susan@rideforlife.com. Boxes of 36 bars are available. Preferably to maximize cost efficiency, we would like to mail out 2 boxes per seller. Each bar is sold for a $2.00 donation. There is a information display sheet also available. Got a sweet tooth? Take a bite and help us out! Everyone loves chocolate and it is after all Valentine’s Day!
