Young people are often touched by ALS. Perhaps it was a parent or grandparent that was afflicted. Maybe it was a neighbor or family friend that they knew. Regardless, children's lives are also affected by this disease. Here is a poignant account of a young lady's great generosity. It is important that children feel empowered. They need to know that they, too, can make a difference.

Last year my grandmother won a large cash prize at a benefit dinner. She was kind enough to give a portion of her winnings to each of her thirteen grandchildren. I was so lucky. And I received $200. My grandparents have always supported various charities and my parents thought we should do the same. Each member of my family decided to donate half of their money to a charitable organization.

I decided to donate my money to Ride for Life because of Mr. Pendergast. He is a teacher at my former elementary school, a dear friend and a person living with ALS. Mr. Pendergast has taught me that with friends helping friends, we will find a cure for ALS.
