Datline: Dedham, Mass
Dedhamites Mike and Joni Coty have turned their passion for go-kart racing into a revenue generator for the fight against Lou Gehrig's Disease. Mike, who is a league go-kart racer and works at F1 Boston in Braintree and his wife Joni, also an avid racer, learned of the A.L.S. Superkart Challenge, a fundraiser being held at F1 - the two made its success their mission.
On Saturday, Jan. 17 more than 90 racers from throughout New England participated in an endurance-style event that helped raise more than $7,000 for the A.L.S. Family Charitable Foundation, Inc. and Compassionate Care, Inc./Gordon T. Heald ALS Fund.
Mike and Joni pounded the pavement and burned up phone lines to help fill the event roster. They were compelled by their desire to honor their friend and neighbor Joe Pagliuca.
Ten teams competed over a two-hour period to determine which team would compete the most laps. In the end Joni's own Team #8 that claimed the A.L.S. Superkart Challenge Championship.
Joni also scored the "Fastest Female" Racer Award after posting the quickest lap of the day by a female.
