Former soccer player Lauro Minghelli died from Lou Gehrig's disease at 31, his former team Torino announced in Rome. Minghelli, who played for Torino and Arezzo, ended his career in 1998 due to the disease, known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

After his career was finished, Minghelli testified in an investigation by prosecutor Raffaele Guariniello looking into an unusually high number of Italian soccer players who have contracted the rare disorder.

Guariniello's investigation involves 46 cases of players with Gehrig's disease. Minghelli is the 16th such player to die.
