  Illinois PALS wanted for study
Posted March 3, 2004 in ALS Research

The Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI, in conjunction with the Great Lakes ALS Study Group (GLALS), is now enrolling for a drug trial with Insulin Growth Factor I (IGF-1). This is an NIH sponsored, multi-center trial. Patients accepted for the study will be randomized to either IGF-1 or placebo for 24 months. The local principal investigator in Milwaukee is Paul E. Barkhaus, M.D.

To qualify, patients must have probable or definite ALS with duration of weakness of 23 months or less and be a maximum of 80 years of age at enrollment. Major exclusionary criteria include diabetes mellitus, systemic cancers, and major medical illness. Other criteria apply that would be explained at initial assessment. Patients need to be able to travel to Milwaukee for initial evaluation, and if accepted, a second visit to receive the medication. Follow-up visits would be at 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months.

Patients from northern Illinois are welcome to make further inquiry. For information, please contact Dr. Barkhaus through his study coordinator, David Miller, R.N., at 414-805-5270.
