A 24-year-old chemistry student has become the youngest Korean to receive a Ph.D. The honor went to Chung Jin-hyuk, who earned his doctorate in Chemistry at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York last December when he was 23.

Until now, the youngest Korean ever to receive a doctoral degree was Yoon Song-lee, who received her Ph.D from MIT at the age of 24.

Chung presented his doctoral thesis on ways to cure Motor Neurone Disease, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease. His thesis is currently patented in the U.S.
