The 2nd annual Long Island Educators Cup Golf Outing held last October was a big success. Born out of a dream by Ride for Life's founder and teacher, Christopher Pendergast to unite the teaching community in an effort to raise awareness and funds for ALS, it was executed by Ride for Life and many wonderful volunteers.
Teachers Associations from Nassau and Suffolk counties participated to raise money for the ALS Clinic at SUNY Stony Brook and a scholarship for a student who has ALS in his/her family.
After a beautiful day of golf at Great Rock Country Club, King’s Park Teachers Association eked out a win with seven under par. The trophy was presented at the LIPC in Montauk at their winter meeting.
After the donations were collected and counted, it was decided that two $2,000.00 scholarships would be presented this year. The Scholarship Selection Committee then went to work diligently reviewing the applications and deciding upon the recipients.
Ride For Life is proud to announce that Scholarships were awarded to two well deserving students, one from Nassau County, Julie Lefkowitz who graduated from Syosset High School and will be attending the University of Buffalo in the Fall.
The other scholarship was presented to Suffolk County resident, Francis Altomare who graduated from Southampton High School and will be attending Rochester Institute of Technology in the fall.
We wish Julie and Francis success in their academic endeavors.
Ride For Life is currently getting ready for the 3rd annual Long Island Educators Cup Golf Outing to take place on Columbus Day, October 10, 2005. We have formed a planning committee this year comprised of Teachers Associations, a representative from SUNY Stony Brook and many members of CGAA, our LIEC proud sponsor.
We have high hopes for an even more successful event which will mean more scholarship money for other students touched by ALS.
