William Floyd Schools To Roll Out The Red Carpet For Ride 2006
April 12, 2006 | Ride for Life
For the 3rd year in a row, schools in the William Floyd School District, on eastern Long Island, will actively participate in the ALS Ride for Life. Ride founder, Chris Pendergast, recently spoke to eager 4th & 5th graders at Nathaniel Woodhull and Tangier Smith Elementary schools.

The students learned about baseball legend, Lou Gehrig. They discovered the devastation and impact of ALS. In addition, they found out about how an individual can make a difference by hearing the story of Ride for Life. The theme, everyone faces problems and each have a choice about coping with it was stressed by Pendergast, an ALS patient.

Woodhull principal, Monica Corona, will send off the Riders from her school on day 8 of the journey (May 5th). The students all assemble outside the building and they carry signs of encouragement and cheer the patients. It is very inspirational for all involved. Everyone loves it.
After a brief ceremony, the older students escort the Ride a short distance. Meeting the large procession will be a group of students from Tangier Smith, led by student advisor, Alison Montalto. Together, the entire gathering travels a little way and then sends the riders off with deafening shouts of good wishers.

In addition to the rousing morning sendoff, the schools also will present the Ride with money they have raised. The students will work hard to help fund research to cure ALS.
This is the 3rd year that Corona’s students have hosted the Ride. Between Montalto’s building and Corona’s, the students have raised several thousand dollars in the past. The Ride salutes these great supporters.
