Day 6 of the 2010 ALS Ride for Life
We finished up day 6 of our 2010 ALS Ride for Life in Greenlawn, Long Island. This is the halfway point of our 12 day, 125 mile power wheelchair journey to raise awareness about ALS and funds to cure it. Whatever exhaustion our bodies may feel, we have been uplifted and renewed by the thousands of students that have welcomed us along our journey thus far.
Rich Kornak has been on 5 previous Rides and is with us again. Joining also are many families from deceased participants. We have a stout and committed group of volunteers assisting. Between them all, Rich and I are holding up well. We have raised lots of money and many schools have made generous donations. Passerby and motorists alike have also shown support and many have made contributions as we Ride. It is encouraging to have such a welcoming response. As I recognize all those who have aided so much to our success thus far, I must include a hearty and sincere salute to the police departments who have provided invaluable assistance. They have been great.
We will try to get more photos up and provide more details. Right now, all of our efforts are focused on the demands presented by each day. Rest assured, we appreciate your good wishes and prayers.
As we near the city, 2 or 3 more patients are expected to join us. One will be traveling all the way from Buffalo to be here. Keven Huling is a returning Rider who, despite his trache, refuses to let ALS interfere with his desire to make a difference.
There is still time for the public to join us for the last day, when we will cross into Manhattan over the venerable Brooklyn Bridge and end up in the ivy lanes of Columbia University. The web site has those details.
With hope,
Chris Pendergast, Patient
